The history of Labour Day dates back to the late 19th century. It was born out of the labor union movement, particularly the campaign for an eight-hour working day. At the time, many workers around the world were forced to work long hours in unsafe and unfair conditions.
One of the key events that led to the recognition of Labour Day was the Haymarket Affair, which took place in Chicago in 1886. During a peaceful rally supporting workers’ rights, a bomb exploded, leading to violence and loss of lives. Despite the tragedy, it brought global attention to the struggles of workers and laid the foundation for labor reforms.
In 1889, the International Socialist Congress declared May 1st as International Workers’ Day to honor the labor movement and those who sacrificed their lives fighting for workers’ rights.
